In June of 2024, Slovenia made history during the European Parliamentary election when voters approved two groundbreaking referendum measures. While not legally binding, the successful votes for decriminalization and domestic cannabis production have paved the way for Slovenia to become a leading international hub for cannabis research and development. With a strong reputation as a research and product development center for other global industries, such as pharmaceuticals, Slovenia’s top-notch universities and scientific laboratories make it an ideal location for conducting research in the emerging cannabis industry. However, the country’s outdated cannabis policies and regulations have hindered its domestic industry. Despite the widespread use of cannabis for personal purposes, various aspects of prohibition still remain in place.
During the June election, voters were asked, “Should the Republic of Slovenia allow the cultivation and processing of cannabis for medical purposes on its territory?” The overwhelming majority (approximately 66%) voted “yes,” sending a clear message to lawmakers that it is time to allow such activities. The benefits of increased medical cannabis production in Slovenia are numerous, including providing better access to effective cannabis therapies for patients in need. It would also give researchers more raw material to conduct their studies on the effects of cannabis on humans and animals, as well as develop better medical cannabis products. This research would not only benefit Slovenia, but also the rest of the world.
According to a recent study published by the U.S. National Institute of Health, 57 countries have adopted medical cannabis legalization measures, with many allowing domestic production without major issues. As the global medical cannabis industry continues to grow, many countries are vying to become top suppliers of medical cannabis products. Slovenia is well-positioned to do so, but the window of opportunity will not last forever, and any delays could result in missed opportunities.
Fortunately, it seems that change is on the horizon in Slovenia. This will be evident at the upcoming International Cannabis Business Conference in Bled on September 13, which focuses on emerging cannabis science and technology. The event will showcase Slovenia’s potential as a leader in this field, and attendees can expect a hip and journalistic writing style, with paragraphs spaced out for easy reading.
