New Jersey Senator Cory Booker Visits Natura, Sacramento to Explore Cannabis Industry and Advocate for Legalization

Senator Cory Booker, a long-time advocate for legal cannabis, made a bold move on Monday by paying a visit to Natura, Sacramento. The senator took the time to tour grow rooms and engage with members of the cannabis community, praising their efforts in pioneering the industry and setting the standard for other states.

In a room full of “weed people,” Senator Booker greeted everyone with a smile and commendations for their bravery in taking legal and personal risks to be a part of the cannabis industry. He also addressed the issue of disproportionate enforcement of marijuana laws on low-income individuals and people of color, calling it a “perverse reality” in America.

But Senator Booker is not just talking the talk – he’s walking the walk. Along with Senator Chuck Schumer of New York and Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, he recently introduced the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act. This legislation aims to end federal cannabis prohibition by removing it from the list of controlled substances and expunging past convictions for low-level cannabis offenses.

In a press release, Senator Booker stated, “Thousands of people have suffered at the hands of our broken cannabis laws, and the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act would finally dismantle the outdated federal marijuana prohibition, expunge past convictions for people with low-level cannabis offenses, and ensure restorative justice for communities impacted by the War on Drugs.”

This announcement came shortly after the DEA’s decision to reschedule cannabis from Schedule 1 to Schedule 3. While this is a step in the right direction, it may not have much impact on those currently serving prison time for federal cannabis offenses. The effects on existing state cannabis markets are also uncertain.

The Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act not only addresses legalization, but also includes provisions for federal regulations and labeling standards for cannabis products. It also allocates funding for substance abuse recovery programs and grants for states to combat the black market.

Senator Booker’s visit to Natura and his advocacy for the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act show his dedication to promoting a more equitable criminal justice system and ensuring public safety. With his bold actions and words, he is making a statement that the time for change is now.
